In 1982, Gordon Johncock won one of the closest Indy 500s in history.

In 1976, Janet Guthrie became the first woman to compete in a NASCAR race.

Also in 1976, Roger Maltbie beat Hale Irwin in a 4-hole playoff to win the inaugural Memorial.

 

Franklin D. Roosevelt Turned the Lights on in Cincinnati – This DiSH for May 24

In 1935, it was the first night game in Major League Baseball

In 1920, a crackdown on gambling at Wrigley Field was carried out as 47 people were arrested in the bleacher seats. 

In 1981, Bobby Unser won the Indianapolis 500. 

In 1987, Al Unser, Sr. won his 4th Indy 500.

In 1992, Al Unser, Jr won the closest Indy 500

And in 2004, Maurice Clarett lost his case with the NFL.

In 2000, 19-year old Adam Petty died during a practice session at Loudon. 

In 1970, Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, hit career homerun #500.

In 1979, Chris Evert lost on clay for the first time in six years. 

In 1997, Kobe Bryant shot five airballs in the closing minutes of their playoff loss to the Utah Jazz.

And in 2012, Rhein Gibson shot a 55 on a full-length golf course. 

Griffith vs. ‘Kid Paret,’ Inspiration for ‘Rocky,’ and an unfortunate bird incident – This DiSH for March 24

In 1962, Emile Griffith vs. Benny ‘Kid’ Paret ended in tragedy. 

In 1975, a Muhammad Ali vs. Chuck Wepner fight inspired a cultural icon.

In 1991, Ayrton Senna won the Brazilian Grand Prix as his gearbox failed.

In 2001, a Randy Johnson fastball struck a bird in flight in a spring training game.

Race Cars, Snow, and a Fight – This DiSH for Feb. 18

In 1979, the Daytona 500 was shown live start to finish for the first time. And wintry weather increased the number of people watching. And then there was the final lap!

In 2001, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. was killed on the final lap of the Daytona 500. What happened as a result of this tragedy has saved the lives of other drivers. 

In 1944, Joe Nuxhall was signed by the Cincinnati Reds and would become the youngest player ever in Major League Baseball.

Earnhardt Finally Wins the Daytona 500! – This DiSH for Feb. 15

In 1998, after 19 previous attempts, Dale Earnhardt, Sr. finally won NASCAR’s biggest race.

In 2004, his son, Dale, Jr. won his first Daytona 500 in only his fifth try. 

In 1994, down 31 points with 15:30 to play, Kentucky stormed back to beat LSU 99-95. 

And in 2004, Arizona State’s baseball team lost 6-0 to Oklahoma. It was the first game in nearly 10 years the Sun Devils had failed to score a run.
